13 Reasons Why: How to Talk to Your Teen

Wednesday, June 28, 2017 -
6:30pm to 8:30pm
Event Description:

Many youth have watched or are watching '13 Reasons Why', a book-turned-Netflix-series that depicts the suicide of a young woman, and its aftermath. The show was recently confirmed for a second season.

The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA National) has joined with the Centre for Suicide Prevention (CSP) in raising concerns about the content. There are concerns that the series may glamorize suicide, and that some content may lead to distress in viewers, and, particularly, in younger viewers.

According to the National Association of School Psychologists, while many youth are resilient and capable of differentiating between a TV drama and real life, engaging in thoughtful conversations with them about the show is vital.

Join us at the Library as we discuss how to talk to your children about suicide in response to the current series.
