Shortgrass Library System is pleased to announce the launch of Transparent Language Online for Libraries, a comprehensive language-learning resource made available to Albertans province-wide by the generous financial support of the Government of Alberta’s Public Library Services Branch, ensuring equitable access to high-quality learning tools across the province.
Replacing Pronunciator, the previous language learning platform, Transparent Language Online offers courses and lessons designed to build listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Learners with a current library membership from any of the 14 Shortgrass member libraries can explore a new language from the comfort of their home, at the library, or on the go. Other Shortgrass e-resources that support language development include Udemy and PressReader, which provides access to newspapers in various languages.
Through Transparent, patrons will have unlimited access to more than 140 languages, including English for speakers of over 30 languages, Indigenous languages such as Cree, Denesuline, and Michif, as well as American Sign Language. The resource is packed with pronunciation practice, speech analysis, grammar, writing activities, and vocabulary-building activities. This extensive language-learning program works on virtually any computer or mobile device through a web browser or the dedicated mobile app.
"We're pleased to offer Transparent Language Online as part of our commitment to lifelong learning and digital inclusion," said Petra Mauerhoff, CEO of Shortgrass Library System. "This tool is especially valuable for travellers, newcomers, job seekers, students, and anyone with a personal or professional interest in language learning. We are grateful to the Government of Alberta for their ongoing support of public libraries across the province."
