Introducing: Community Journals

Be part of the Medicine Hat story. Contribute to our community wide memento of 2021.
Posted on 18 January 2021 by Miranda.

This month at MHPL we are introducing Community Journals! These are blank journals that any patron of MHPL can check-out and add their own thoughts and ideas to. By the end of the year our hope is to have a collection of stories, memories, and artwork created by the community that can be checked out and read. Think of it as a community wide memento of 2021.

There are many reasons to bring community journals to the library, but I think right now (more than ever) creating a sense of community and togetherness is so important. This is a socially-distanced way to connect with others. A way for you to be part of the Medicine Hat Story. So, the only questions left are: How do I check out one of these journals? And, what can be written inside them?

How do I get one of these journals?

You can call the library at 403-502-8525 to place a hold or set-up a no-contact pick-up for one of the journals. Then, come pick it up, take it home, and add to the works inside! Each journal is available for 3 weeks at a time.

What can be written inside the journals?

We have a few different types of journals that I’ll list below. Each journal has a specific theme that we ask you to stick with when you write in it.

Cookbook

A collection of recipes gathered together from those in our community.

Memories of Medicine Hat

A collection of memories about our city by the community.

Ongoing Story

A continuous story where you would pick up the story from where the last patron left off.

Creative Writing

A collection of poems and stories by those in our community. Unlike the ongoing story, each entry will be separate from the rest of the entries in the journal.

Artbook

A collection of artwork from those in the community. Drawings, comics, sketches, etc.

Journals for Teens

Ongoing Story

A continuous story where you would pick up the story from where the last patron left off.

Fandom

Write a poem, short-story, or comic related to your favourite fandom featuring characters from a particular TV series, movie, etc.

Artbook

A collection of artwork from teens in the community. Drawings, comics, sketches, etc.

Ready to write?

Any of these sound interesting to you? Want to be part of the wider Medicine Hat story and community? Call us today at 403-502-8525 to place a hold on one of these journals or to schedule a no-contact pick-up.

Big Truck Day 2026 Is Rolling To Co-op Place For Bigger Fun

There are fewer than three weeks to go until our second Big Truck Day and things are looking good for our goal of making it bigger and better than the first. At last year’s event we received an overwhelming response and lots of feedback on different and additional vehicles people wanted to see. Community businesses and organizations were also eager to bring their vehicles to the next Big Truck Day. We set out to make those things happen, and the first step was to find a bigger venue. We found the biggest in the city. Big Truck Day 2026 will take place at Co-op Place on Saturday, June 20, from 11 a.m.…...read more
