Perk up your ears and listen to a pitch perfect celebration of Canadian music at Medicine Hat Public Library.

Canada Music Week: Amateur Showcase is a free concert in the Library Theatre on Saturday, Nov. 22, that will feature close to 30 local music students using their voices, guitar, strings and brass to perform Canadian music from all genres.

Patricia Swan says the local chapter of the Alberta Registered Music Teachers’ Association (ARMTA) is excited to celebrate the 65th year of Canada Music Week. Swan is an ARMTA member-at-large and a voice teacher in the community.

“I'm passionate about Canadian composers, Canadian music, of all genres, but I particularly collaborated with Richard Link, who is a born and raised Medicine Hat person and he now teaches musical theatre composition in England,” says Swan. “I wanted to have students perform his music, so I wanted to celebrate Canada Music Week and also about connecting to what's happening in Canada right now, too. We are identifying more as Canadians and I just wanted to show that we do have more wonderful Canadian music.”

Pianist Rebecca Zhou is excited to perform at the show.

“I’ve played in festivals before but not really a concert, and it’s good to see other musicians singing and performing,” she says.

The Medicine Hat College Girls’ Choir, the TarTones and nine-year-old provincial award-winning composer are also among the scheduled performers.

Outside the theatre there will be an art display with a musical theme. In the Honor Currie Room there will be tables spotlighting local music history, original compositions by Canadian composers and ARMTA.

The open house begins at 1 p.m. and the concert at 2 p.m.
