Just like teenagers themselves grow and change, the teen programs at Medicine Hat Public Library are always growing and changing.
The leadership of the TIC TAC (Teens Initiating Change Together And Committed) committee has been a key part of the evolution, and we want to introduce you to the current co-presidents and vice-president.
Introducing Mariah, Ty and Ricky (left to right above). Follow @mhplteens on Instagram and TikTok to keep up with everything they're doing.
MARIAH (co-president)
How long have you been with TIC TAC?
This is my third year with TIC TAC! I think I started in 2022
What do you love most about TIC TAC?
I love the community in TIC TAC. We all love each other so much and are like one big family! I have also found some really close friends.
What is your favourite memory of TIC TAC?
I have a million favourite memories from TIC TAC, but the reoccurring theme in all of them is how accepted I’ve felt, and also the pride in what I’ve accomplished and done for the library and other teens. I’m so proud of myself for all the work I’ve put in!
What do you hope to accomplish as president/vice-president this year?
This year I hope to ease into the role of co-president so that next year I can be one as amazing as Ty. I hope to work on establishing a community for teens where they are free to be themselves and look forward to Teen Nights every night. I want a place where people can feel accepted and represented!
Why are the library and teen nights a good place/event for teens?
The library is an incredible place for teens. We cater to everyone - soft spaces, loud spaces, different events, games, and activities… you’ll always find something you want to do! You can also always find support at the library no matter what - no one will judge you there, and no one will ever turn you down if you ask for help. The community is super positive and just an overall happy place to be.
TY (co-president)
How long have you been with TIC TAC?
I've been in TIC TAC for six years and it is my last year before I age out.
What do you love most about TIC TAC?
My favourite part so far has been the connections I've made, some of my closest friends have been made through TIC TAC. So many friendships have been made through Teen Nights, and the library as a whole.
What is your favourite memory of TIC TAC?
My favourite memory is so hard to narrow down. I think it would be the first Christmas party after COVID. It was such a great way to grow closer with the TIC TAC crew, and rekindle some older relationships. It was the moment that I knew that everything we worked toward was worth it.
What do you hope to accomplish as president/vice-president this year?
I hope to continue pushing the positive connections that can be made, create community connections through the library and fellow city partners, and help the youth wherever needed to build the skills that they need to develop.
Why are the library and teen nights a good place/event for teens?
Community partnerships, adult role models and youth with common interests; everyone can find a place they belong.
RICKY (vice-president)
How long have you been with TIC TAC?
Two-and-a-bit years
What do you love most about TIC TAC?
I really love how busy we are.
What is your favourite memory of TIC TAC?
When another TIC TAC member was constantly the murderer at multiple murder mystery events.
What do you hope to accomplish as president/vice-president this year?
I really just want to maintain the library and its events as a safe place for everyone.
Why are the library and teen nights a good place/event for teens?
It's a great place to just chill, play games and meet people.
