MHPL Is Playing Matchmaker For Valentine's Day

Posted on 31 January 2025 by Chris Brown.

Well-meaning people have been known to offer to set up friends and family, hoping to spark a love connection – especially as Valentine’s Day approaches.

Medicine Hat Public Library is putting a bookish twist on that, one we guarantee will not lead to a first date disaster and potentially end a friendship.

We’ve created quizzes for tweens, teens and adults about their reading interest, preferences, likes and dislikes and library staff will match you with a book we think will be the one for you.

“This is an opportunity to get new titles in the hands of people who might never have picked them up otherwise,” says Miranda Leduc, adult and community librarian. “It also gives the library a chance to connect with our community in a more personalized way.”

Karla Gaetz in youth services says this is “a great chance for tweens to diversify their reading. While keeping their preferences in mind, Book Cupid will find a book they know your tween will love and even throw in a few treats.”

Teen librarian Stephanie Kuhn recalls a similar program when the library was closed during the pandemic. Back then, a subscription service got new books and a bag of goodies into the hands of teens as a way to stay connected. The service was discontinued when in-person programming resumed.

“But so many teens have been asking us to bring it back, says Kuhn. “So we thought Valentine’s Day would be the perfect season to bring it back (temporarily) to spread some love.”

The quizzes - links below - will be open from Feb. 1-7 and your books will be ready to be picked up on Feb. 14. Patrons must have a valid library card in good standing to sign up, and there are limited spots available.
