Save-On-Foods set Medicine Hat Public Library’s Honeycomb House and its teen users abuzz last week.
The national grocer’s Medicine Hat store will be keeping the shelves stocked and the teens fueled for a long, long time.
“Save-On-Foods have come forward and offered lifetime sponsorship for providing snacks in our space for the teens visiting the library,” says teen librarian Stephanie Kuhn.
She says the Honeycomb House often goes through a fully loaded grocery cart every single month.
Teas, fruit juices, juice boxes, bread, peanut butter, jam, cookies, oatmeal, fresh fruit, Mr. Noodles, and Kraft Dinner are just some of what store manager Tony Segouin and his team brought in the first delivery on Jan. 28.
When Kuhn reached out about a possible sponsorship, Segouin was struck by the number of teens the Honeycomb House sees each month.
“I found out that they reach 300-plus students a month,” he said. “We want to let teens know that we’re here in the community to support them in whatever thing that they need.”
Kuhn says snacks are important in the Honeycomb House to fight food insecurity, and help teens who sometimes come to the space right after school and don’t get home until after dinner time.
