Iona Lane will be a long way from home when she performs in the Library Theatre on Friday, March 6, at 7 p.m. The Highlands-based singer-songwriter is next up in our Home Routes Concert Series, and she won’t be the only one belting out the tunes.
Lane’s work is deeply rooted in landscape, ecology, and folklore.
“Expect stories and songs of the land and sea of Scotland,” Lane writes in an email. “Lighthouses to mountains, lichen, woodlands, basking sharks and mythical creatures. There will be lots of storytelling and opportunities to join in too!”
Tickets, $10 each or $24 for three, are available at the Library. Fifty per cent of the ticket sales from the show will be donated to the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society, with the other half going to Lane.
Lane’s new album "Swilkie" brings together poetic songwriting and atmospheric melodies inspired by three artist residencies on the Isle of Eigg, the Isle of Mull, and Sanday in Orkney. Her deep connection to coastal environments is reflected in her music and expressed through evolving vocal lines, delicate guitar work, and the warm drone of shruti box. She says some of her favourite songwriters include Karine Polwart, Kris Drever, Joshua Burnside, and Rachel Sermanni.
This will be Lane’s first time in Canada.
“I can't wait! I'm really looking forward to meeting lots of new people and exploring a new part of the world. Being able to explore the national parks a wee bit will be fun for sure!” she says.
Kaeley Jade on Sunday, April 12 is the final performer in the Home Routes/Chemin Chez Nous Concert Series we began last fall. Ticket sales from her show will support the Root Cellar Food & Wellness Hub.
