Sundogs Cornhole League Hosting Bags For Books On Canada Day

Proceeds to be donated to our A Library Card for Every Hatter program

The SouthEast Alberta Sundogs Cornhole League will shine on Medicine Hat Public Library and bark up interest in the popular summer pastime on July 1.

The Sundogs will have a booth at the Canada Day Festival in Kin Coulee Park where members will promote the league and give people the chance to test their cornhole skills in Bags for Books.

“A $5 donation buys the donor four cornhole bags with the goal of landing one or more bags on the board or putting it through the hole on the board,” explains Tom Simpson, who founded the league in 2023 with his wife Carol.

The day’s proceeds will be donated to Medicine Hat Public Library’s sponsored card program A Library Card for Every Hatter

Simpson says he and his family have been lifelong readers and regular library visitors.

“We believe our library is one of the most important community facilities, with something to offer for all age groups. When we were presented with the opportunity to participate at Canada Day and brainstorming ideas, the library was our first choice based on the wide impact it has in the community,” he says.

The library won’t be the only winner, adds Simpson. Each bag a thrower lands on the board will earn them an entry in hourly library prize draws, and each bag in the hole will earns an entry in the grand prize draw for a $200 pizza oven.

The Sundogs have drop-in play on Wednesday evenings through July and August in Kin Coulee Park near the baseball field on the west side of the park. Check-in is at 5:30 p.m. with play starting 30 minutes later. The cost is $15 per person and all skill levels are welcome. The league supplies all the equipment and offers one-on-one coaching for new players. In the fall the league moves indoors to the Medicine Hat Legion.
