Posted on 29 January 2026 by Chris Brown.

Old-time music on banjo, guitar, jaw harp and his own invention the contrabass harmoniphoneum. We promise you this will be a performance unlike anything you’ve seen before.

Lotus Wight will be on the Library Theatre stage on Thursday, Feb. 5, at 7 p.m. Tickets, $10 each or $24 for three, are available at the Library and at the Medicine Hat SPCA, to which 50 per cent of the ticket sales will be donated.

Wight describes himself as a songwriter and revivalist of musical antiquities. His music is described as being in the key of folk, blues, and ragtime.

“My original songs sound as if they have been plucked from the canon of Lomax field recordings and I delight my audiences with humour and narrative,” he tells us.

His instruments also delight his audiences. He says the jaw harp in particular has proven to be an intriguing piece that utters a curious sound that is both compelling and familiar. If that sounds compelling, Wight will have them for sale at the show and offers a free jaw harp lesson to any concert-goer who purchases one.

A nominee for Stan Rogers Traditional Singer of the Year at the 2026 Canadian Folk Music Awards, Wight is on tour to promote his recent release “Original Works for Voice and Banjo.”

Wight is the third show of the Home Routes/Chemin Chez Nous Concert Series that we began last fall. Iona Lane will perform on March 6, followed by Kaeley Jade on April 12. Ticket sales from those concerts will support the Medicine Hat Women's Shelter Society and Root Cellar Food & Wellness Hub, respectively.
