Medicine Hat Public Library Board Wins 2016 Award of Excellence

The Medicine Hat Public Library Board of Trustees is being honoured with the Alberta Library Trustees' Association (ALTA) Award of Excellence (serving populations more than 20,000) for successful initiatives implemented during the library’s 2015 centennial year. According to current Board Chair Rose Sanchez, “the board's dedication and service truly culminated in MHPL's 100th anniversary in 2015, providing additional opportunities for learning, free memberships so more people could 'look at us now' and see that the public library offers so much more than just books, as well as hosting our first Lovin' the Library fundraiser." Board and staff initiatives led to a 30% increase in the library’s member base and more than 247,000 visits to the library last year.

The prestigious Award of Excellence will be presented to the Library Board on May 29 by ALTA President Laura Ross-Giroux during a brunch celebrating the 315 volunteers that donated more than 1400 hours to the library this past year. "As board chair for 2016, I would like to congratulate Medicine Hat Public Library Board Trustees, both current and in past years, who have worked hard to help ensure library services have been equitable for all so the library can be a true community hub, serving the needs of Medicine Hat," said Sanchez.

Although the library’s centennial year is over, the Board’s work is far from done. According to Sanchez, "our board continues, in our 101st year, to work so the public library can be a valued resource, fostering life-long learning and enhancing the vitality of the community. MHPL will continue to be a community hub where people can access programs and materials that educate, enrich, entertain and inform."
