The Friends of the Medicine Hat Public Library continues to be there for us.
The group is the current sponsor of our A Library Card for Every Hatter program after donating $5,000, enough to make library cards FREE for 1,000 adults in Medicine Hat (kids’ cards are always free).
Friends member Sue Masterman says since the whole purpose of the group is to support MHPL, donating toward library cards just made sense.
"We want to encourage as many community members as possible to enlarge their world by getting a library card," she explains.
The Friends of the Medicine Hat Public Library was formed in 1961 and have raised money for Library building projects, renovation and rehabilitation of the Library building and its furnishings, program supplies, and more. The biggest fundraising activity is the annual book sale held in the spring or summer.
The $5,000 to sponsor cards isn’t the only donation the Friends made. The same amount was also given for us to add to our eBook and eAudiobook collection.
Masterman says even after many years of library membership, she still discovers authors whose writing moves, excites and delights her.
“MHPL is one of my happy places, a place where I can lose myself in the stacks for hours, exploring new worlds and finding treasures,” she says, and adds the library means different things to different people.
“I think that for many it is a safe place, a place to learn and grow, a place to find answers.”
